Perspective

Impact investing industry has been attracting interest of various asset owners, like the insurance companies, pension funds, traditional banks, commercial PE/VC investors, foundations and family offices. Globally it is being observed that HNIs/family offices see value in investing in impact to help inculcate responsible long-term investing practices intergenerationally. Additionally, family offices have greater discretion on their investment decisions and are not bound by regulations like most other asset owners.

In the context of India, only a tiny proportion of the total HNI investment is directed towards budding entrepreneurs or start-ups. With increased awareness about more sustainable practices, a lot of family offices would keenly look at social and environmental impact while making philanthropic investments, are also more strongly considering ‘impact investing’ on their asset side. If that trend succeeds in leveraging more funds towards social impact, it will accelerate the growth of the industry.

Key Questions to be addressed in the panel discussion

01

Considering the need for market-based solutions in India (vis a vis grants or government spending), what is the perspective of family offices on impact investing as a part of their asset allocation and/or philanthropic strategy?

02

Most sectors that impact investing operates in (health/education/agriculture/financial access for low-income customers) are also large market opportunities. Do you think it is possible to generate returns and create a deep impact together and what are the best examples of success stories from your experience?

03

What are the key challenges that need to be overcome and what can we do to popularize impact investing amongst India HNIs and family offices?

04

Impact is becoming mainstream owing to the push from the millennials and the next generation. Is a similar trend being observed in the investment preferences of the Indian HNIs and family offices?
